Heal as quickly and painlessly as possible by following Downtown Dental Group’s after-care guides.
Leave 2×2 gauze in place for 20 minutes. Replace with new gauze provided. Fold gauze twice (into quarter) and dampen prior to placement.
Place gauze as needed for profuse bleeding. Some oozing is acceptable. Place the gauze and bite forcefully for 5 minutes. Use the gauze as a “pressure dressing”. Gauze utilized without pressure can act as a “wick” and actually promote more bleeding.
Do not expectorate (spit) forcefully for three days after tooth is removed
Do not suck on a straw for three days after tooth is removed
Do not smoke for three days after tooth is removed
Place a “cold pack” on cheek or face adjacent to surgical site on and off every other 20 minutes for up to two hours post extraction. Following that cold packs can be used for 24 hours post extraction on and off as tolerated to assist with swelling.
Take all pain medications as prescribed. If indicated, take medication prior to “numbness wearing off” to assist with post operative pain management.
Take any other medications as prescribed including antibiotics. Medication compliance is very important.
Do not “play” with your sutures. Sutures place with resorbing material will not “dissolve into thin air” rather they may become loose or untied after a few days. If this happens it is acceptable to remove the suture material. Sutures placed with non resorbing material (silk) need to be removed at a suture removal appointment. If you have any questions regarding sutures, please contact the office.
Start to resume your diet as soon as possible after no nausea and vomiting are evident. It is easier on your stomach and GI track if medication is taken with “a little something” in your stomach. Start with a soft diet and advance to a normal diet as tolerated.
